AREWA News is an English-language news publication covering Northern Nigeria — the 19 states of the North West, North East and North Central, together with the Federal Capital Territory. We exist because the North is widely reported on and rarely reported from. Our newsroom is based in the region we cover.
Our editorial decisions are made solely by our editors. No advertiser, sponsor, political party, government body or private interest has any influence over what we publish or how we report it. Where a story touches an organisation that has a commercial relationship with us, we disclose that relationship in the story.
We verify before we publish. Factual claims are attributed to a named source, an official document, or direct observation by our reporters. Where we rely on a single source for a significant claim, we say so. We do not publish material sourced solely from social media without independent confirmation.
We name sources wherever possible. We grant anonymity only where a source faces a credible risk of harm, and only with the approval of a senior editor. When we use an anonymous source we explain to readers why anonymity was granted and what position the source is in to know the information.
Reporting and commentary are clearly labelled and kept separate. Material published under Opinion, Editorial or Analysis reflects the view of its author or of the editorial board, and is marked as such.
Advertising is visually distinct from editorial content. Any sponsored or paid material is labelled as such at the top of the item. Our commercial team has no role in editorial decisions.
Every AREWA News article is written, reported and edited by people. We may use software tools to assist with tasks such as transcription, translation and data analysis, but no article is published without human reporting and human editorial review.
We correct errors promptly and visibly. See our Corrections Policy for how to report an error and how we handle it.
