EU Presents 23 Recommendations to Improve Nigeria’s Elections

A delegation from the European Union election observation mission visited Abuja to meet with Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and follow up on recommendations made after the 2023 general election. The mission, led by Barry Andrews, aims to help raise Nigeria’s elections to international standards.

The EU observers issued 23 recommendations to improve the electoral process, including allowing early voting for essential workers and Nigerians living abroad, and reviewing disputed elections. Andrews said the mission was pleased to see progress on some recommendations but acknowledged that others require legislative and constitutional reforms that take time.

INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu told the delegation that the commission has already implemented eight of the EU recommendations that fall within its authority. This visit is the third by EU observers since the 2023 vote and reflects ongoing cooperation between INEC and international partners to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
