NYSC Scheme Saves Lagos N14.8 Billion Annually, DG Says

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme in Nigeria is saving the Lagos State government about \₦ billion every year, according to the NYSC Director‑General, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed. He said about 44,000 youth corps members currently serve in Lagos and provide essential services across the state.

The breakdown of their contribution includes 303 doctors, 7,148 teachers, 274 nurses, 31 pharmacists, 3,861 engineers, 9,172 agricultural graduates, 7,172 health professionals and 4,574 technicians. Without the corps members, the state would have to hire staff at a cost of \u20a614.8 billion, Ahmed explained.

He praised the Lagos government for supporting the NYSC programme and for building a new orientation camp in Ikorodu. Ahmed added that Lagos does not owe any outstanding allowances to corps members and that the scheme is working with other states to replicate similar savings.

The NYSC chief emphasised that the programme helps integrate young Nigerians from different regions and urged employers to offer more opportunities for corps members to contribute to national development.
